Guy Savoy, first chef to join the Académie des Beaux-Arts

Guy Savoy, first chef to join the Académie des Beaux-Arts

Mathilde Bourge | 11/18/24, 8:01 AM

Guy Savoy becomes the first chef to be elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts. A fine recognition not only for the chef, but for an entire profession.

Another award for Guy Savoy. The chef, crowned with 5 toques for his eponymous restaurant in Paris, has made history by becoming the first chef to be elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts. His nomination was made in the open members' section of this prestigious institution, as confirmed by the Académie.

Recognition for gastronomy

In a press release, Laurent Petitgirard, perpetual secretary of the Académie des beaux-arts, hailed the election:"In electing Guy Savoy, the Académie des beaux-arts has not only saluted one of the most eminent representatives of French gastronomy, but also a humanist, and passionateof contemporary art, who contributes to the international influence of our country, as demonstrated by his commitment to the inclusion of the gastronomic meal on UNESCO's intangible heritage list", he emphasized.

For his part, Guy Savoy expressed his delight on Instagram: "What a joy to join the Académie des beaux-arts!" he wrote."Thanks to the free members' section, gastronomy now rubs shoulders with disciplines such as painting, sculpture, architecture, engraving, drawing, musical composition, audiovisual and cinematographic creation, photography, choreography. I'm delighted to be contributing to the work and missions of the Académie des Beaux-Arts alongside creators I esteem and admire".

at 71, Guy Savoy succeeds Michel David-Weill, collector and patron of the arts, who died in 2022. The section des membres libres, which grew out of the section d'histoire et théorie des arts created by Napoleon in 1815 and confirmed under Louis XVIII, thus welcomes an emblematic figure of French gastronomy. Previous members of this section have included personalities such as Baron Haussmann, mime artist Marceau, fashion designer Pierre Cardin and choreographer Maurice Béjart.
